When most people hear "core strength," they immediately think of six-pack abs or endless crunches. But here’s the truth: your core is way more than just the muscles you see in the mirror. (Sorry for those who are after a six pack)
Your core is a complex group of muscles that includes not just your abdominals, but also your obliques, lower back, glutes, pelvic floor, and even your diaphragm. In short, it’s everything that supports your spine, stabilises your movements, and keeps you standing tall. 🧍♀️🧍
💪Why Core Strength Matters (Beyond the Aesthetics) 💪
A strong core improves:
Strength training. for all you gym junkies you will be able to lift heavier
Cardio training you will be able to run faster, cycle longer and swim without drowning.
Posture: Helping you stand tall and reduce slouching.
Balance and stability: Whether you're walking, running, or carrying groceries, your core is working behind the scenes. 🛒
Injury prevention: A stable core reduces strain on your back and joints. 🛡️
Everyday movement: From tying your shoes to lifting something off the floor, your core is engaged more often than you think. (Yes, even reaching for the snacks 🍪)
The Problem with Only Training the "Mirror Muscles" 🪞
Crunches and sit-ups may build visible abs, but if you’re neglecting the deeper core muscles, you’re building strength on a shaky foundation. It’s like putting a fancy roof on a house with weak walls. 🏚️

What Does Functional Core Training Look Like? 🤔
- Planks and side planks (aka shaking like a leaf challenge 🌪️)
- Stability strength training - such as doing bicep curls standing on one leg
- Glute exercises - for example, legged glute bridges
- Lower back exercises - such as Jefferson curls
- Anti-rotation exercises (like Pallof presses) 🌀
These exercises train your core to do what it’s supposed to do: stabilise and support your body through movement.
